Your own blog

If you are Tokyo-based and interested in setting up your own blog, on March 15 I will be teaching a Workshop on creating a blog using Movable Type, the web-based content management system used to run this site. The workshop will be taught through Digital Eve Japan at a beginner’s level. Further details to come, but if you are interested in attending, please send an email to workshops@digitalevejapan.org.

DigitalEve’s mission is to promote women’s digital lifestyles by offering a supportive community and programs tuned to women using IT in their workplace and in their everyday lives. I have taken a number of courses taught through them and they were all excellent including a web building class by MJ. Below are two photos I took as a part of a digital photograpy class taught by Kristen.

  1. I’m in the process of writing an open source application similar to movabletype that can be used to create web sites and blogs. Users will be able to create and admin the site through their web browser and also add custom modules. I’m curious about what sort of features people would like in such an application. i.e. more customizable, gui like layout tools?

  2. I can’t speak for everyone else, but for whatever it is worth: What was important to me was to be able to completely control the look of my blog and to integrate it with other aspects of a site. Some plug in’s would be nice like password protection and I have yet to find software that creates photogalleries that I like.

  3. I use Gallery v1.3.3 for my photo galleries for my blog. I think it is the best gallery software out there. Its really powerful and can be integrated into any site really well, though its not that user friendly. It took me a while to get it to look and react the way I wanted it to, but once I got it working I was very pleased with it. If you haven’t already you should give it a try.
